Top 10 Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns Songs

I've found I go through phases with Disney movies, I completely immerse myself in one for a few months and then head onto the next one. The last few months I've been obsessed with both Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns. I recently got a new phone and all I downloaded on it was the soundtracks to both films. I have a special place for the original, as I prefer classic Disney over anything else. But I also live for full circle moments, and Mary Poppins Returns is chock full of them, including my favorite cameo of all time: Dick Van Dyke. So, here are my top 10 mixed list of Mary Poppins themed songs.

10. Let's Go Fly a Kite

I love this song simply because it's a practically perfect wrap-up to the original film. The kite represents so much in both movies; imagination, childhood, family, love, fun, nostalgia, and eventually ends up saving the Banks family home. It represents more than just a regular song.

9. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

The reason why this song is far down on the list is because I had to choreograph a routine to it and the word was stuck in my head for weeks. It still made it to the list however, because even if you've never watched Mary Poppins, you know this word exists somewhere. That's how iconic it is. I'm surprised it made it past P.L Travers.

8. Spoonful of Sugar

This is also one of those songs that everyone just somehow knows. I love the metaphor behind it, that when something is unpleasant, you can make it pleasant by adding something else to it. It's just not my ultimate high energy song, that's all.

7. Trip a Little Light Fantastic

The dance number in this song was insane and I love the nods to step in time. It had the right amount of energy, it came at an otherwise "dull" part in the film, and my favorite line has to be "for your light comes with a lifetime guarantee".

6. A Cover is Not the Book

This song was interesting to me because it's not Mary Poppins at all, but it is the Emily Blunt version, so I have to give her that. It is definitely the supercali of this film, as it's catchy, upbeat, and the colors used are just phenomenal. It also brings back our beloved penguins!

5. Jolly Holiday

This song is so endearing to me, as it's all about Bert admiring Mary and how she can make anything feel magical. It also has the iconic striped suit and white dress, as well as the dancing penguins that Walt Disney fought so hard to have.

4. (Underneath the) Lovely London Sky

Lin-Manuel Miranda did such a good job in this role and his voice is infectious. This song makes me feel like I'm in a Disney movie when I listen to it outside. It completely lifts my mood and was a great choice as an opening song.

3. Can You Imagine That

This song is the spoonful of sugar of its film, and it is so catchy and relevant to the film. It teaches the kids a valuable lesson about not letting go of their childhood and imagination. "Off we go" is just too, too good too.

2. Step in Time

As you saw by my previous post, I just love Dick Van Dyke as Bert. Bert is the foundation of the film in many ways, so having the longest number dedicated to him makes total sense. My favorite fact about this song is that Van Dyke wasn't a dancer before this film and was afraid of doing complicated choreography, yet in this song he's doing rolls into jumps into leaps into tap dancing and everything else. He still dances everyday, today.

1. Chim Chim Cheree

Chim chim cheree is the only song from the original soundtrack to win an award, and an Academy Award for Best Original Song at that. It is the most nostalgic song of all for me. It mentions shaking hands with a chimney sweep gives you luck, which in the end helps Mr. Banks, it foreshadows Mary's return, shows how much Bert really knows the children, and more. This song is packed full of information, silliness, and originality.

Honorable Mention**:

Trip a Little Light Fantastic Reprise featuring Dick Van Dyke is also my number 1, but my biggest flaw with it is that it is way too short. When I first saw that clip and I saw Mr. Van Dyke tap dancing on the table and showing the same energy he did as when he was Bert, it made me tear up. It's also the most full circle moment, as he came back to play Mr. Dawes Jr. I just love it.
